In
response to the overwhelming amount of electronic information
available on the Internet, there has been a trend towards portals of
various kinds in the last few years that help the user to "wade"
through the vast number of websites available. These resources,
whether "gateways", "web portals", "vortals" or "portals", all
provide a single interface from which the user can search either
wide ranging or more specific
topics.
Unlike
web portals and search engines such as Yahoo!, libraries offer
a significant amount of "quality control" with web sites being
assessed for relevance, bias and reliability.
In the
United
Kingdom
, the Subject Portals
Project (SPP) is an initiative of the Resource Discovery
Network, a
U.K.
based "family of subject-based gateways" which connect "students,
teachers and researchers to appropriate, high-quality content on the
Internet." These subject gateways or "hubs" represent a wide range
of subject areas, including the social sciences, the biological
sciences, engineering and the humanities.
