Domain Search

We can search all parts of the URL: the top level domain (TLD), company or organization domain, the host, the directory and file names. But capabilities differ across the search engines.

Methods of Searching on Domain

Method 1: Field Name

site:edu

Enter the word site, followed by a colon, followed by the domain you want to find. Do not leave any spaces. This method is used at Google, Yahoo, MSN, Teoma, and Exalead.

Method 2: Form

Some prefer using the Advanced Search form. Look for a box that says domain or site. Some also offer choices for country or geographic region.

Searching Parts of the URL

Host, site, url, domain - which field name should we use? There is no standard. You have to know how each search engine interprets these words or whether it will recognize the name at all. Use the Comparison Charts to help you remember.
